Local Information on Madrid

Some useful hints for your stay in Madrid:

  • Currency in Spain is the euro.
  • Plugs usually are type F, also type C. For more information, check it here
  • You can hail a taxi on the street, but you can also call to order one. In addition, companies like Cabify, Uber or Bolt offer their services in Madrid.
  • There is also a bicycle service in Madrid, called Bicimad
  • If you are at touristic places in the city center you would better not wear anything that publicities you as a tourist (e.g., the conference badge) to reduce attracting pickpockets (like in any other city).
  • It is not necessary to give a tip on service at bars or restaurants, but it may be nice to round up to the next ten or up to 5-10%.
  • Small shops close between noon (e.g., 14:00) and the early afternoon (e.g., 17:30), but larger shops can be open all day. Similarly, at the weekend, small shops open on Saturday morning and perhaps Saturday evening, but larger shops may also open on Sunday.
